Spring 2008 - Seventh Edition
Breaking the Barrier Quarterly
Language Learning for All Seasons
John Conner and Cindy Beams
We've honored a New Year's resolution to put a stop to the tyranny of too much paper in our lives! We have decided to reduce our consumption of natural resources while taking advantage of wondrous advances in printing techology. We are pleased to announce a new, environmentally-friendly print cycle that continues our commitment to providing products that are continually improving and always up-to-date. We will now print our texts on an ongoing basis as we need them, rather than each June. This development means that some titles may be updated more often than once a year and others slightly less often. Every time we go to press, our maps will be updated with current heads of state and cultural references will be "refreshed." You will always receive our most up-to-date version. Rest assured that the page numbers are locked in, the text will not change in any way, nor will answers to any exercises! To avoid confusion, all ISBN numbers will continue to be the same. The inside cover with note the season and year of any new "printing." Think Green!
The winter freeze inevitably gives way to freely-flowing rivers and streams in springtime. John Conner mirrors the season as he presents STEP TEN ~ Free-Flow Discussion from his popular workshop for teachers, The Ideal Lesson Plan: Ten Steps for Making Your Students Fluent.
Each month I write a column for Think Spanish magazine. This terrific publication has high-interest articles of great cultural significance to students studying Spanish.
Spring Fever and the itch to travel go hand in hand. Why not give in to your travel bug by beginning to polish up your Spanish and French? The Self-Learner Special and the Listen and Speak Now! section of our website offer superb preparation for summertime adventure. As you gear up for your departure, why not devote a few minutes each day to breaking the language barrier? We guarantee that your efforts to speak Spanish and French will be rewarded many times over.
Watching those rows of lettuce, onion and carrot appear in the garden is one of spring's profound pleasures. We hope you will derive similar pleasure from the new entries that are continually popping up in our carefully-organized rows of archival material. It's a fertile spot for cultivating your curiosity and harvesting a bounty of knowledge.
Rites of Spring
As the New England winter softens its icy grip, we're ready and waiting for those rites of spring. Assembling the articles for the GREEN ISSUE of The Breaking the Barrier Quarterly has certainly helped us exchange our winter blues for the green harbingers of springtime. Maybe....just maybe....these offerings will jumpstart spring for you too! John Conner and Cindy Beams

As winter draws to a close, many of us dream of escaping to warm places. Maybe we'll get to that sunny beach, but then again, maybe we won't! No matter what, this season of change-in- the-air seems a perfect time to consider the subjunctive.
